Tin enhances colors, particularly reds, oranges, and yellows, providing brighter, clearer results faster than other mordants. While not a standalone mordant, it excels as a modifier with others, often combined with cream of tartar ( ounce tin and 1-2 ounces cream of tartar per pound of wool). For pre-dyeing, wool is immersed in a cold bath containing 4% stannous chloride and 2% oxalic acid, heated to boiling, and maintained for an hour. It can also be added late in natural dyeing to intensify color, or used with cochineal for scarlet wool in a single bath.
